Just Perfect For Sharing - Friendship

Proverbs and friendshipWhat wisdom does the book of Proverbs give on the subject of friendship? Surprisingly, quite a lot. The book of Proverbs spends much time describing and defining friendship. One of the prime qualities of a friend is loyalty. Prov. 18:24 “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” There are friends who merely pretend. But there is friendship that goes deeper and shows more loyalty than that of a brother. Prov. 17:17 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” A friend in need is a friend indeed. According to Proverbs there will always be fair-weather friends. But a true friend will be there through thick and thin. In case we think only of the friendship we hope to receive, we are told to give this kind of loyalty, even to our parent’s friends, in Proverbs 27:10 which urges, “Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father and do not go to your brother’s house when disaster strikes you — better a neighbour nearby than a brother far away.” You know that old family friend of your parents? Make sure you keep being loyal to them too. Another quality of friendship in Proverbs is Honest Counsel A true friend must be lovingly honest and should help shape their friend’s character. Prov. 27:6 “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” Like a surgeon, friends cut you in order to heal you. If a friend says hard words to you out of love, this is better than kisses from an enemy. True friends will rebuke you when necessary; point out where you are going wrong. This is never easy to do, and unless you are a real friend, you probably won’t say anything negative. So if a friend of yours is sinning in some way that comes to your attention, the loving thing to do is lovingly, gently confront them. Prov. 28:23 “Whoever rebukes a man will afterwards find more favour than he who flatters with his tongue” Likewise if a friend pulls you up on something they think you are sinning in, don’t go defensive or counter attack, accept their words as words of love. For true friends counsel and encourage each other Prov.27:9 “Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel” Prov. 27:17 “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” Friends become wiser together through a healthy difference in points of view. Counsel and healthy disagreement in a friendship can make life sweeter and you sharper. A true friendship will have both elements. So be honest, frank and open with your friends. That’s the character of true friendship. How do you stack up? Are you an honest and loyal friend? Can you say the hard words to your friends? When you friend goes through a hard time are you the first one there with a hug and phone call or prayer? Or are you nowhere to be found? Real friends always let you in, and they never let you down. credits: www.fervr.net

Charity:Water

I have just been watching a Foundation series [hosted by Kevin Rose] featuring Scott Harrison. This is yet another awesome Foundation video hosted by Kevin. What really moved and took my interest with this one was how Scott relates his life to Christianity.

In one section of the video, Scott talks about how he hired a designer [who later became his wife]. When she got hired, she took a drop in salary and also had to forego her health insurance. Any she asked to go out to Liberia so that she took get a first hand intel on what Charity Water was doing. With no money to assist her with a plane ticket, this designer runs up her credit cards for this trip. Now here is where it gets interesting. On her return back to the US, the designer fall ill with malaria and has to be hospitalised. Her medical costs comes up to a tune of $40,000. WOW - for someone who has just given up her healthcare! But, Scott and team have a lot of faith and pray about it.

Please click on the optic above of link below to listen to this amazing story. Charity Water - Kevin Rose sits with Scott Harrison, founder of the non-profit charity:water, which brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

What A Pleasant Surprise Today

Today I was a made absolutely speechless with a kind gesture from a couple of ladies in Denmark. This is how it happened. I got a call from one of the IT Support guys based in the main Rockwell building in Milton Keynes. He told me that he had a package for me. I was intrigued because as far as I knew, I was not expecting a package. Anyway, he went on to inform me that the afternoon delivery van would have it in Bletchley late afternoon. Around 3PM, the delivery guy brought the package up to me in my office. I grabbed my pair of scissors and proceeded to open the box. In it was a thank you card and a lovely box of chocolates.

Once again….thanks Dorte and Jette, you ladies rock!

A Day At Newark Everyday Champions Church

The trip to Newark started off at 8 AM. I got picked up from Reachout Community Church by Yuri and his lovely wife. I actually thought I had got the day wrong because they did not arrive till ten minutes after eight. Anyway a quite calculated pray and we were on our way to Newark. I am fairly good at pin pointing [roughly] where towns are generally located in my neck of the woods, however this time I got it totally wrong. I thought we would be going in the direction of Cambridge on the A14. I soon got to learn that Newark was up north on the A1. The trip was uneventful and took up just under one and a half hours to get there. After a nice cup of coffee served from the Coffee shop in the church and some socialising, we were all ready to sit down and listen to the vision for the church and some testimonies.I would just like to make mention of Steve's presentation. He talked about how God speaks to all of us... ALL the time. He illustrated this by telling us that we are all equiped with an inbuilt radio, and that all we need to do is tune this radio from Radio 2 to the Holy Channel. He then went on to give testimonies of word he has had from God and how he has prayed to the people involved in the word he has had. Conclusions? It was a fantastic day out visiting another church, getting together with other members from the Nottingham and Newark church, making friends and sharing.I managed to get some optics. Please do not scrutinise them. I used my Blackberry phone to take the picture.

Uncertainty - Weathering the Storms with God's Promises

The Oxford Dictionary [online[ defines uncertainty as:

noun (plural uncertainties)[mass noun] the state of being uncertain:times of uncertainty and danger  [count noun] (usually uncertainties) something that is uncertain or that causes one to feel uncertain:financial uncertainties.

Faith

Our sermon today at church [Reachout Community Church] was about UNCERTAINTY. Before I go any furthur, I just want to mention that my writing speed is not up to scratch, so I have just managed to jot down as much as I could based on this.

There is undoubtedly so much uncertainty that surrounds all of us. For some people, it is the uncertainty of their jobs, for others it is the uncertainty of even getting a job. There is nothing we scan actually say [of our lives on this earth] that we can certain of. In light of this, Gareth Morgan highlighted the below three points.

  • How should we respond in an uncertain world
  • How should we deal with uncertainty in our lives.
  • When uncertainty gets into you, it starts to shrivel you up from the inside.

The reading was taken from Hebrews Chapter 11 verses 13 to 16:

The Heavenly Hope - 13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland.

15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had the opportunity to return.

16 But now they desire a better, that is, heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

Knowing for certain - reminding yourself what you are certain of. Uncertainty - ungrounded you. It stops you from moving on.

There are 4 decisions/choices you need to make to give you the lift. Recognise what faith does. Faith - sustains you. Uncertainty - makes you go all over the place. In relation to the verses quoted above, Gareth related uncertainty to all 4 of these verses, unfortunately I managed to capture three of them.

Verse 14 - We all hit packets of lows, moments of dark days and uncertainty, phases whereby we think that that is the end. We should remind ourselves that this is just a phase and that we are just passing through. We need remind ourselves that this is not it. Verse 15 - You cannot go back. You need to be pushing forward. Say to God that you are not going back but pushing forward. Verse 16 - Make a declaration. Make the choice of arriving at that point/destination.

Ghana Rent Control Offices - A Bloody Joke Or What?

There seems to be something seriously wrong with the way things are being run at Ghana's Rent Control Offices in Accra. Talk about Piss-taking! I have been trying to get rid of a tenant from my property for the best part of five months now [ tis excludes the three months grace period given to her on paper]. I have blogged the events leading to her eviction on this blog, so if you are interested, you are welcome to read and acquaint yourself with the details. So this officer at the Rent Control Offices has been asking my representative in Accra [ and the tenant] to turn up at his office and on each occasion, he has had a story to tell as to why he hasn't come to a conclusion on what action needs to be taken. As of this Monday, the 17th, my representative has been to his office 4 times, and on each occasion, he has given her another date to return to his office. On her last trip, when she got there, he told her that he had not finished writing out the judgement. What the hell. Is this guy for real?

So I did a quick search on the internet and below is what I came up with regarding the Rent Control Offices in Accra, Ghana

Department Flooded with Complaints, Unable to Address Renter’s Needs

In Ghana, the Rent Control Department is mandated to settle disputes between landlords, tenants, and other interested parties. Long delays and inconsistent practices have marred the department’s reputation in recent years.

Madam Comfort, a tenant at Buashie in Accra who lodged a complaint against her landlord for unlawfully trying to evict her.  But after multiple visits where no progress was made, Comfort says she eventually stopped going back. “I went there several times and waited several hours. I stopped going there because I was wasting money and time at the place,” she says.

A visit to the Rent Control Department in Accra revealed a flood of unhappy landlords and angry tenants with a variety of complaints. Fred Tawiah of the Accra office of Rent Control Department says he hears complaints of “nuisance” and “unpaid rents” everyday. With a pile of documented rent cases on his desk, Tawiah admits that the office is understaffed and unable to adequately hear all of the cases. With a long sigh Tawiah says there is a strong need to build more houses in Accra and says he encourages government leaders to invest in housing construction.

The above was sourced from www.globalpressinstitute.org. There are several key points to this snipet

1. The Rent Control Department is mandated to settle disputes between Landlords and Tenants - this is obviously not the case. Interestedly enough, the person who has been tossing my representative up and down is the same person named in this article: Fred Tawiah. With a cut and dry case like this, why has he resorted to changing dates so many times? ]

2. Madam Comfort has been to the offices several times, only to be disappointed on each visit because nothing could be done to assist her. Just imagine the amount of money this poor lady had to spend on each trip. With the people placed in charge to resolve issues dragging their feet, how are things supposed to progress in a positive manner there?

3. Of course Mr Tawiah will have a "truck load" of cases pending on his desk, because he is dragging his feet on the ones he can easily resolve. Is this what the tax payers money is being used for?

Another link I found on the web is on MC Modern Ghana webpage. Check it out. This article was written in June this year!!

I am simply pissed off with this guy and intend to do something about this.

Mens Breakfast - Saturday October 8th @ Reachout Community Church

I have been missing several Mens Breakfast call outs for a long, long time. So when it was announced last week in church that today was going to be a Mens Breakfast session, I immediately made a positive mental note to make it a point to attend.

I was so thrilled to be there, especially to receive words of encouragement from fellow friends.

Gareth drove up from Newark to preach to us, which was very kind of him.

Below are some pictures I took today.

One day It Will All Make Sense

Whiles doing my normal rounds of browsing on Facenook this evening, I came across some pictures taken by Prince Agyeman. I kind of like his pictures, so whenever his has new posting - which are mainly pictures - I tend to spend some time looking through his shots. So I came across some he had taken, I suspect of a book launch by a rap artistcalled Common. I must admit, I have never heard of this person, or of any of his music. So I quickly do some Googling and find out that this book has been highly recommended, even by Maya Angelou. Now if she says a book is good then it must be good. So I then quickly head over to Amazon and order the book. Sixteen quid it cost me, but I am sure it is worth every penny. Below is a review I have yanked from Adam Bradley [credits to you]

Click on the link above to read the whole review on this book.

Starting Off

OK, the contents that you see below were originally on another page on this website. I thought I could then further update the contents of this page as you would on your home page in wordpress. However after an extensive search on the internet on various forums, it appears this is not possible. What a blow. So I have had to transfer the contents and created a category labelled "Akramaman And The Lartey Family". What this now means is that I can update anything related to this category and mark it up as such. Also, all the comments previously made have been moved so they will appear as all being made on the same day. I could edit the dates, but I don't have the time, hence I am leaving it as it is. On this page, I am going to try to map the roots of my Family Tree. Born in the UK, and later moved to Ghana to do my secondary school education, I moved around the different regions in Ghana with my Mother, hence during those years, I didnt have much contact with the rest of my family in Ghana. When I did eventually got introduced to them,I suppose in a way, it was too late. There are so many of us, scattered everywhere. I would say the Lartey Family is more concentrated in the USA and in the UK. There are a few family members in Germany.

My Late Mother's name is Madam Elizabeth Laingoye Lartey. She had four other brothers namely Mr Emmanuel Adjin Lartey, Mr George Lartey, Mr Kotoko Lartey and Mr Aryee Lartey. They have all passed away. Uncle Adjin Lartey was the last one to recently kick the bucket.

......to be continued

25th December 2010

I will work around my four uncles (who have all passed away). When I was recently in Ghana, i was supposed to sit down with my cousin and seek her help in getting the Akramaman Family tree down on paper. Unfortunately other pressing issues had to be sorted out. I am back in Ghana - by God's Grace - on the first of January. Hopefully I will be able to sit down with her and get this project underway.

The Four Uncles are; 1. Mr George Lartey 2. Mr Kotoku Lartey 3. Mr Aryee Lartey 4. Mr Adjin Lartey

Mentoring Tuesday

About three years ago, I decided that I would ask one of the Directors at the place I work to be my mentor. I approached his secretary and asked her to put the question forward on  my behalf. Days rolled into weeks, and weeks into months and the secretary still hadn't asked the question for me. So I decided to take the task into my own hands. At a convenient time, I approached the Director and popped the question,. He was absolutely delighted, but insisted that he would only mentor me once a year;  and as they say, the rest is history. On tuesday, I meet up with him for my second mentoring session with him. Actually, I messed  out meeting for the day up. I assumed that our meeting [as I recall from the reminder in my dairy] was for 3.30PM. When I went up at 3.20PM to see his secretary, she looked at me with surprise and said she thought I was already with the Director in his office. Oh dear I said to myself, thats me doomed. Anyway I asked the secretary to apologise to him and try and pen me in for another day. Just as I got to my desk, my phone starts ringing. It is the secretary. She says the Director would like to see me ASAP for our meeting. I silently said a pray of thanks to God and rushed back up for my meeting.

Our meeting started off with me updating my mentor with what I have been up to since our lasting meeting. I then went to inform him that I was concentrating my efforts on Project Management and attaining a certification in Network Security. With regards to Project Management, I said I had identified certain people within the company whom I had approached for help, however I was concerned about the frequency I can approach these people to remind them of my plight. The good thing is that I have made that first move towards seeking assistance; my problem, which I mentioned was how much the people I have approached be willing to assist me. Mentor: do not assume that the help you have asked for will be forthcoming. Me: why? Mentor: [1] people like to make you think that they want to help, but will not. [2] people are afraid of you progressing further than they can if they help you. [3] your immediate contact might not be in the best position to help, whereby, you will need to speak to the person who is above your contact for help. [4] your contact might be too busy, even though they give you the impression that they want to help. Everyone is not forthcoming in telling you what is black and white.

Finally, I sort some advice from my mentor regarding a pressing issue. Over the course of my IT career, I have acquired a code set of friends whom I constantly keep in touch with. Now I have noticed that most of these friends tend to get high paying contracts, whiles I am stuck with the measely hourly rate. Whenever I see these friends of mine, it is immediately obvious that they are doing well for themselves financially. Obviously, being the human being that I am, I tend to dip into this "sense" of being low. It does not last long, as I always tend to snap out of it. Mentor: Value what you have.

Nightmare On Blogodo Road - 23/08/2011

Who said God doesn't answer prayers?

So since my last update, a few things have been happening here and there regarding the saga I have with Ms Florence Massoud. There have been a few more visits to the Rent Control Offices, and also the guy handling the case at the Rent Control Offfice has taken a trip to my property to have a look around. Why, only God knows, however my agent did inform me that Ms Florence was seeking repayment of money she has invested in the renovation of the main building, but I doubt that was his reason for taking the trip there - Lord help us.

And another development has arisen - a good and positive one I should say. , My current tenants have decided to vacate the main building. According to my tenant, he has been offered a contract in another part of Ghana, hence renting the property will no longer be required - fair enough. I do have my suspicions though and I am certain that Ms Florence Massoud has been pestering  them. Well they have gone now, which I personally think is a blessing in disguise because Ms Florence Massoud can now take her stuff out of the main building and I can replace them together with any other work that needs to be done.

So, why my first statement "Who said God doesn't answer prayers"; I got a text message from my agent 2 days ago informing that Ms Florence Massoud was packing her stuff from the out house she is currently occupying. You can imagine my joy sandwiched between the surprises . I seriously thought I would have to purposely go back to Ghana to personally throw this woman out of my house.

My agent says she will still have to make that final trip to the Rent Control Offices as requested by the Officer the for his verdict. One thing though, I am not lowering my guard regarding Ms Florence Massoud all because I do not trust her. People of her nature always seem to have something up their sleeves.

My lessons learnt so far?
1. Get someone to make regular visits to your property on your behalf on a regular basis. Stick the money into a high earning account. At the end of the day, if you don't have to use the money, at least you can earn some interest out of it.
2. Demand a deposit from any potential tenant. The will used to offset any cost you the Landlord might incur if the tenant damages your property.
3.  Never lease your property out for more than two years in a row. For example, if you someone wants to lease your property for 6 years and you are comfortable with that, then just renew the lease every 2 years with the option to cancel the lease after a period of the agreed by both of you.
4. Do not lease to individuals, unless they are filthy rich. Lease out to companies and even then, they must be bloody rich. Do an intensive investigation on the company or person. All this is in aid of giving yourself some piece of mind.

Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple

Steve Jobs, co-founder and two-time CEO of Apple, offered his resignation to the company’s board Wednesday.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Jobs has been in poor health for some time. In January, he announced that he would be taking a medical leave of absence from the company. He returned to the public spotlight in March to help launch the iPad 2.

Jobs advised the board to “execute our succession plan” — by naming Tim Cook to replace him. Cook, formerly the COO of the company, has been standing in for Jobs since January and was widely tipped to be his successor. Cook also stood in for Jobs during his bout with pancreatic cancer in 2004. “The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” said board member Art Levinson, chairman of biotech firm Genentech, in a prepared statement.

Jobs will not be leaving the company altogether, and the move was clearly well-planned in advance. He has been elected Chairman of the board, Apple said Wednesday, and Cook will be joining the board, effective immediately.

“I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it,” Jobs wrote. “I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.”

Apple stock was down 7% in after-hours trading, but rallied and was down just 5% by 7:50pm ET — suggesting Apple’s succession plan had calmed the markets.

Here’s the full text of Jobs’ statement.

All That Glitters Is Not Gold

Life can work its charm on you. When that happens, you feel so good with yourself. Your day is just a breeze and you do not have a care in the world. Even in such a situation, you are prepared for what is thrown at you, because you do not expect the "totally unexpected". However I must admit, other people have confessed that there comes a moment when you get a nasty slap on the face. A slap which, no matter how hard you attempt to deflect it or take the hit, knocks you right off your feet.

Saying this brings me on to the next bit. This is out of a simple question. How prepared should one be from the moment they awake up from bed till when they lay down to sleep. You think or to say, imagine, that you have seen it all. However there is just that occasion, totally unexpected, that slaps you in the face and completely slams you the  ground. Your reaction? Total disbelief. Your comeback? Several hours after. Your after thought[s]? That is for you to decide. This occurrence would not be from a stranger, but from someone whom you thought you knew. Someone whom you thought you got on well with, not exactly a friend or family member. If that were the case, then I should think you could handle it much better. It has been said that people are funny, meaning - as I would decipher it as — you cannot successfully analysis a person or even think that you know someone that well. Somewhere along the paths that you both travel and happen to link, you will find out about the bad side of this person. Actually bad side is too strong a definition, I would say "the unexpected or the unimaginable".

Their have been times when I have read about people blatantly being accused of something they haven't done, and you can see on the other side of the picture the accused strongly denying any knowledge of the charges being shoved his/her way. Of course these are like day to day issues that you have probably come across in real life or from watching a TV show. You do not take much notice of it because, hey its just one of those things and also it has never happened to you, so you say to yourself "who gives a rat arse".
